At Cortex Neuro Rehab, we pride ourselves on providing cutting-edge, evidence-based neurological physiotherapy to help stroke survivors achieve the best possible outcomes. One of our key areas of expertise is modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT), a proven intervention to improve upper limb function.
I'm excited to share I've had the 4th study from my PhD published in the Australian Occupational Therapy Journal! This study explored the challenges and successes of implementing mCIMT within a large rehabilitation service in Perth. Here's what we found.
Our research focused on therapists' and managers' experiences delivering mCIMT as part of a behaviour change intervention within the large rehabilitation service. While mCIMT has strong evidence backing its effectiveness, its consistent delivery in clinical practice remains a challenge. Therapists identified time constraints, confidence levels, and patient-specific factors such as motivation and caregiver support as significant factors in determining whether mCIMT was offered.
One key finding was that the interdisciplinary collaboration and tailored support provided to the rehab team helped improve both confidence and delivery of mCIMT, highlighting the importance of ongoing training and teamwork. Importantly, therapy assistants played a vital role in sustaining these improvements, which allowed us to deliver high-quality rehabilitation without additional resources.
