Professional Development

'A rising tide lifts all boats'

At Cortex Neuro Rehab, we believe in sharing our knowledge. Skilled, effective neurological physiotherapists in Perth are good for our profession and better for our community.

Targeted education to meet individual needs is hard to find. Our professional development services are bespoke offerings, and entirely flexible to work with you.

So, if you're a physiotherapist in Perth (or anywhere in Western Australia) wanting support to progress your development in neurological rehabilitation, contact us to see how we can assist.

Training and education

Providing clinical education is a passion of mine! I love teaching and adapting my teaching style to the many learning styles that we as physiotherapists have.

Training and education can be provided to individuals or to groups/services and can range anywhere from a 1-hour webinar to a 2-day face-to-face course!

Some of the training and courses I run currently includes, but is not limited to:

  • Upper Limb CIMT - 2 days (I wrote, developed and present this course for the Australian Physiotherapy Association)

  • Clinical reasoning in neurological rehabilitation

  • Goal setting

  • Gait analysis and treatment planning

  • Severe impairment upper limb retraining

  • Hemiplegic shoulder pain

  • Spasticity assessment and clinical reasoning

  • Research skills- searching, interpreting, applying the literature

  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation, particularly EMG-triggered NMES

  • Vestibular Assessment and Treatment (including BPPV, complex dizziness)

  • Complex transfers

  • Falls and floor mobility in a neurological population

Clinical supervision and career mentoring

Becoming a confident and effective neurological physiotherapist is a journey that takes time, with the right support and experience.

I was very lucky early in my career to have some great mentors and clinical experiences across Australia. Sharing my journey and providing guidance on the actions you can take in your development is a good starting point for a mentoring relationship.

My approach is friendly and non-judgmental. We start with understanding your career goals, your neurological experience to-date and your learning styles.

From here, a bespoke plan is developed with you based on the amount of support you're wanting. This can be anything from some targeted education, caseload reviews, semi-regular catch ups, information about useful courses to attend, joint visits and career planning or more!

Mentoring is a bilateral relationship, you're welcome to contact me to get a feel if we're a good fit to work together.

3

Joint sessions for treatment planning

Do you have a tricky neurological rehab patient that you'd like some help with assessment and therapy planning?

Not sure which impairments to prioritise to meet your patient's goals?

Or just want another set of eyes to see if you're on the right track with your plan and get ideas for progressing therapy?

This is our specialty! Ashan Weerakkody has spent many years providing clinical consultation, support and therapy planning to physiotherapists and occupational therapists across the Perth region.

Support can be tailored to your learning needs- either a one-off joint consultation for a complex patient or as part of a series in your overall development in neurological rehabilitation practice.

4

Beer with mates

Just kidding! Or maybe not... grab some friends also working in neuro rehab and we can catch up over a coffee (or whatever you like) and talk all things neuro- principles, controversies, latest research, therapy ideas, jobs- you name it.
